Cairns Chamber Of Commerce Update

With the recent elections now concluded and Matt Smith, Member for Leichhardt, taking up office on Mulgrave Road, it’s time to get back to federal business. The Cairns Chamber of Commerce looks forward to working together as a collective with all three levels of government to advance business-friendly policies for our region.

We were delighted to welcome 16 new members in July, bringing more energy to our business network. It’s a testament to the value of connection, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future of Cairns. If you’re ready to be part of this dynamic business community, simply scan the QR code to join today.

From Budgets to Big Picture Thinking
On 1 July, we joined forces with TTNQ and Advance Cairns to host the Queensland Treasurer, the Hon David Janetzki MP, for the 2025 State Budget Address. The conversation was a timely reminder that economic decisions made in Brisbane ripple directly into the lives and livelihoods of our local business community.

Later that month, the July Economic Outlook Luncheon drew a full house of curious minds eager to hear from renowned economist Pete Faulkner. With clarity and insight, Pete unpacked topics from inflation forecasts, to the impacts of global tariffs, extreme weather events, productivity challenges, and labour market shifts.

For those keen to keep their finger on the pulse, the Cairns Economic Monitor is fast becoming the go-to monthly snapshot of our region’s performance. Published by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce with the valued support of LJ Hooker Cairns Edge Hill, WGC Lawyers, and PVW Partners Accountants, it’s a free resource that distils the numbers into meaningful insights for decision-making. Spotlight on Opportunity
If one thing has been clear from recent events like the Developing Northern Australia Conference and the CAPA Conference, it’s that our region’s potential is vast.
We’re also looking ahead to the News Corp Bush Summit, which promises to put Far North Queensland in the national spotlight and explore bold ideas for regional growth.

FNQ DAMA
For more than six years, the Far North Queensland Designated Area Migration Agreement (FNQ DAMA) has been bridging local skills gaps by allowing employers to recruit from overseas when roles can’t be filled domestically. Unlike standard skilled migration programs, the FNQ DAMA is tailored to the unique needs of our region, offering a broader list of eligible occupations and flexible concessions.

Recent updates from VETASSESS mean even more occupations are now eligible – welcome news for industries feeling the pinch of workforce shortages. Our Migration Manager, Geoff Heath, hosts free FNQ DAMA Information Sessions for employers on the first Wednesday of each month. Register via our website to learn how this skilled migration program can help your business access international talent.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Workforce
Finding the right talent is one of the biggest challenges facing business today. That’s why we were excited to launch Work Experience Guide for Business on 5 September. It is designed to help businesses of all sizes discover new ways to attract, train, and retain staff, to “grow our own” and shape the workforce of the future.

Connecting, Celebrating, and
Growing Together
There’s nothing quite like the buzz of a Chamber networking night. On 4 September, Business, Beer & Bubbles returns, this time at the Botanica Lifestyle Resort. With a glass in hand, delicious canapés, and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect blend of business and pleasure.

Business Excellence Awards Gala Ball – Celebrating the Best in Cairns Business
Every year, the Cairns business community comes together for one unforgettable night — the Business Excellence Awards Gala Ball, proudly sponsored by James Cook University. This black-tie celebration is the pinnacle of our calendar, recognising the visionaries, innovators, and dedicated teams whose efforts keep our region thriving.

On Friday 17 October 2025, the Cairns Convention Centre will be transformed into a dazzling celebration of success. Guests will enjoy an evening of live entertainment, a decadent three-course meal, and a four-hour drinks package including beer, wine, soft drinks, and spirits.

More than just an awards night, the Gala is a chance to connect, celebrate, and be inspired by the stories of those making an extraordinary impact in our community. Whether you’re a finalist, a proud supporter, or simply looking for a night of glamour and inspiration, this is an event not to be missed.
