A New Chapter in the Tropics For Australian Festival of Chamber Music

After 35 years in Townsville, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) is composing a new movement, bound for Cairns.
From 2026, the internationally acclaimed festival will make Cairns its new home, ushering in a vibrant era for music lovers across the region.
This decision follows a crescendo of growth, with the 2024 festival marking record-breaking attendance and expanded community engagement.
The move to Cairns is a strategic step, ensuring the festival’s continued evolution while honouring its rich legacy in Townsville.
“This is not a departure from North Queensland; it’s an evolution within it,” said AFCM Chair Mary Jo Capps AM.
“We’re deeply grateful to Townsville for 35 extraordinary years and look forward to celebrating that legacy during our 2025 festival.”
Cairns, with its world-class venues, vibrant arts scene and stunning natural beauty, offers an ideal setting for the festival’s next chapter. The city’s walkable layout and strong community spirit align perfectly with AFCM’s vision for accessibility and cultural connection.
Cairns Mayor Cr Amy Eden expressed enthusiasm about the festival’s relocation.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome the Australian Festival of Chamber Music to Cairns. This move is more than a cultural milestone, it’s a regional celebration that will enrich our community and economy.”
The festival’s relocation also paves the way for the expansion of its acclaimed Pathways Program, supported by philanthropic foundations such as The Ian Potter Foundation and The Donald and Joan Wilson Foundation.
This initiative will enhance emerging artist development, regional school workshops, and international exchanges, further cementing AFCM’s commitment to regional Queensland.
As the festival prepares for its final year in Townsville, audiences can anticipate a heartfelt celebration from 25 July to 2 August 2025.
Artistic director Jack Liebeck has curated a compelling program featuring 36 extraordinary musicians, including 11 international artists and six world premieres.
“Expect a festival filled with music, memories, and milestone moments,” said Capps.
“Townsville will always be a part of our story, and we look forward to a farewell year filled with gratitude and great music.”
