Publisher’s Note | Summer 2024
WOW! How did we get here so fast!? I know they say time speeds up when get older, but seriously the speed at which this year has flown by is ridiculous don’t you think?!
I have spoken to so many people feeling the same way recently, and my true belief is that this year has been a year with so much going on that people have not even had time to catch their breathe in the middle of it all. If we think back, it all started with the FNQ Floods in December 2023, then there was the carnage that it left behind and the immense clean up to get people’s lives, businesses and communities back on track. Everyone doing their little bit to assist in whatever way they could. Then it was as if nothing happened, and everyone was back into the machine of business and life and trying to keep the wheels turning in our community. We experienced the loss of many big names in our community and so too around the world. Cost of living pressures hit many hard too, but everyone kept just getting on with it as we do up here in FNQ. We just get on with it, without complaint. As one of our clients has always said to me, “when the going gets tough, it’s foot to the metal and all guns blazing!” … and it feels like that is exactly what our community has collectively done in the past 12 months. All of those lows have been beautifully intertwined with so many high points and big high five moments for our region, and the emotional toll that this has taken on people I think it’s worn many out. People are exhausted and rightly so. And “Christmas can’t come fast enough” is the collective chant I hear coming out of everyone’s mouths. I feel you, I really do.
But as I sit back writing the final Publisher’s Note for 2024 and think about all our community has endured over the past year. I sit back with the greatest sense of pride with how we have continued to support one another and lift each other up and rise to each and every occasion despite the hurdles. How bloody good are the people of Far North Queensland? I mean really … I am not too sure those southern folk could cop what we’ve had thrown at us and continue to show up, stand up, fight back and do it all with a smile and a “she’ll be right attitude” – I’m just not sure they’re made of the same stuff 😉 #justsayin
