Publisher’s Note | Third Quarter 2020
The tension rising is palpable for people across the country as our beloved Australia battles the second wave of COVID-19. As we write this, we are putting the finishing touches on this edition, and as we put it to bed, restrictions are increasing, borders are closing between states and we have many wondering when the hell this will ever end.
We are in very different times there is no denying that, and sticking together and supporting local businesses has never been more important. That is why the CityLife™ team has thrown its weight behind the Keep It In Cairns campaign brought to you by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Cairns Regional Council, and we have many local businesses showcasing their products and services in this edition, so please do whatever you can to support them as every dollar spent in this region stays here and supports the many families employed by these businesses.
We have also thrown our support behind the early launch of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal to help raise much needed funds for those most vulnerable in our community so they can enjoy some Christmas cheer at the end of this year when they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. So please give whatever you can to the Mayor’s Appeal, it is running from now through until December(details on page 13 ).
We are also VERY excited to see so many events re-emerging from their COVID slumber, we have a jam packed list of WHAT’S ON so we can all get out there and support one another, have some fun while social distancing and reconnect with each other in person.
The CityLife™ team is incredibly grateful for the support our loyal advertisers and contributors have shown us this year, it’s hard to believe we are so far into 2020 already!. Time has become a bit of a blur for many of us who have worked the whole way through this pandemic. We are sure we speak for everyone who has maintained their job or their business during these times when we say it’s been a slog. We are all exhausted and in desperate need of a holiday, but grateful we have businesses and jobs as we know so many don’t.
What the CityLife™ team have recently started doing regularly is local STAYCATIONS, lapping up the plethora of accommodation options, restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions. We are doing mini STAYCAYS to ease the mental load and we have got to tell you it’s worked wonders for our sanity! Businesses are providing so many local specials at the moment, so get out there and get amongst our little piece of paradise and enjoy living in the best part of the world where we have wide open spaces wherever you turn.
We are also extremely grateful and proud of the business resilience we have seen in our community and the way in which so many businesses are pivoting to meet the market in these times. Many of them we have showcased in this edition and we encourage you to pop into your local gift shop to buy something for a loved one just to let them know you care, or buy your mate that’s less fortunate than you a meal or a coffee from one of our fantastic restaurants doing super special lunch deals. Just get out there and immerse yourself in the best place on earth – our home town of Cairns.
